How To Create a DIY Sim Racing Rig In 13 Steps
1 – Find a racing seat.
For this DIY thread, any racing seat without its base will be ok. We are looking for seats that will be directly on the ground with their fixation rails. See the example below.
2 – Find your pedals
Next you’ve got to know what pedals you will use. In case of doubts, you can refer to our article treating about the subject or go buy our recommendation ,the Thrustmaster T LCM.
3 – Once you know what seat and pedals you will use, it is time to take the measurements.
First, take the measurement of your ideal distance between the back of the seat and the back of the pedals. This distance will depend on how far you want the pedals to be from the seat so obviously it will depend on your leg length.
4 – You have to choose 2 timbers that will have the length measured above. Usually, the length will be between 1100 mm and 1400 mm depending on your leg length.
You also need to choose the timbers’ width in such way that the inner width of the frame once the seat is fixed on it is slightly wider that the width of the pedals. See below.
5 – Once you have the width of the timber you can start assembling the frame and fix the seat on the timber frame.
For now you should have something like this:
With the racing seat fixed on one side and the pedals inside the frame on the other side.
6 – You can put a wedge under the pedal set to create a slope for the pedals an allow them to be blocked by the timber frame.
7 – Determine your ideal distance between the back seat and the steering wheel mount. This will depend on your arm length. (Usually, 600 mm from the far end of the rig, where the pedals are, would be nice if you are regular sized)
8 – Determine your ideal steering wheel height.
This height will determine the length of the 2 additional timbers that will be mounted on the frame to create the support table for the steering wheel.
9 – Assemble on the frame 2 additional timbers with your determined height that will be at the right distance from the seat for your arms.
You should have this:
10 – Assemble 2 additional timbers on the back end of your rig as reinforcements for the mount table.
11 – Add the steering wheel mount (table) so that if fits on the vertical timbers
12 – Paint your rig. Appearance is always a must.
13 – Start racing!
